SD Card Naming Thing...

Scribble

Does anyone know if it's been announced if they plan to fix the naming of the SD Card?

If not... that kind of makes me a bit upset. :P

I've heard differing views- most apps seem to only want to save to or look at sd-card for files... makes your 16 or 32 gig sd card-ext kind of useless...

I'm under the impression that Ice Cream Sandwich will use the two "cards" differently and that there will be no issues after that. Oh, and I did read that on the internet so it MUST be true!!

All your documents, pictures, videos, music, downloads, backups, etc. can be on your sdcard-ext (external microsd). I guess the 12 Gb of files on mine are just useless.

Use something like Amazon Cloud player and when you download local music, it puts it in the internal storage. Same with Google music.

Google plus's instant upload scans only the internal storage, so if you put your pictures on the external card, suddenly it doesn't see any of them and instant upload stops. Dropbox stores all of the locally downloaded files to the internal sd card, no way to change it- same with evernote. Just about every app I have puts all of it's locally cached files in the internal storage rather then the much larger external card.

So it's great that I can store a bunch of stuff there, but doing so reduces the functionality of the phone, because none of the apps look there or make use of it I'm going to end up not doing it, making it useless to me.

Very well said Scribble. I have been SCREAMING this same thing at both Motorola (and Verizon for what it's worth) ever since I bought my Bionic back in September and this issue has been driving me crazy!!! I have almost ALL of the Gameloft games that I bought when using my Droid-X. Most of them have really large data folders that must be stored in the "SDCard" area which now happens to be the small 8GB of internal space on the Bionic whereas before these data folders were stored on my actual 32GB SDCard which as you mentioned (for all practical purposes IS USELESS because the games won't look there for their data). I can't tell you how many times I have seen errors telling me that I have no more room to install apps on my Bionic, something that I have NEVER seen on my Droid-X...EVER!!!! I am always having to get rid of something in order to make room to install something new which is BULLSH*T for a brand new powerhouse of a phone like the Bionic!! This has caused me to have to really pick and choose what to put on the Bionic because less than half of the data from my Droid-X will even fit...making me feel even less that the Bionic is an upgrade from the DX because it holds SO MUCH LESS!!

Don't get me wrong, I DO LOVE the upgrade in other areas (Dual Core, 4G LTE speeds, higher resolution, etc.) but I want all the same apps and games that I have come to love over the years from my previous Android devices, which should be a simple task. I should feel like the Bionic can do all that my DX and other Android phones could do but it doesn't feel that way because of this memory issue.

Like you, I have also been told that Ice Cream Sandwich will resolve all of this but until then, that remains to be seen, and I have learned by now to NOT believe much until I see it for myself. We'll see, but I just wanted to share my experiences with you to let you know that I also feel your pain VERY MUCH, so you are not alone in this issue although it doesn't seem to be talked about very much IMHO. I remember several months ago asking both Motorola AND Verizon technicians if there would be any issues/problems like this one if upgrading from the DX to the Bionic and ALL said "No. There will be no issues at all going from the one phone to the other."...but now I see that was not exactly true. If I knew then that I would have to sacrifice so many of my apps and games from my previous phones, I would have probably waited to buy my Bionic AFTER Ice Cream Sandwich was released. That's my 2 cents, or maybe 5 cents actually.

Thanks.

My problem with the memory issue is pretty obsurd.. I have the youtube downloader. I download youtube videos from my youtube app with it. Sometimes it works sometimes I get that ERROR: NOT ENOUGH MEMORY SPACE. I have over 6 gb of memory on my internal storage and over 7 gb of memory on my external memory. I don't understand what the problem is. It seems like ever since I upgraded my Bionic to ICS it has had all types of problems. Its quite irritating although I love my Bionic and it is better than the iphone 4 in a side by side comparison. These issues are ridiculous.

What about the 4 GB app storage? It may be going there. There's a free app called Disk Usage that'll show you what is where and how much space it uses.

The whole memory thing actually gets even worse on other devices. On my ASUS tablet (Jellybean),my external MicroSD card is actually under sdcard>removable. Seems to be a pretty hot topic on the ASUS Infinity forum as well. As previously stated, Dropbox, Google Music & Amazon all put music on internal storage. You'd think the developers from Android, Vendors and the app developers could standardize on something! Storage for Camera apps are all over the board as well. It would at least be helpful if app developers would let you specify storage/scanned folder locations (a few do). It is a free-for-all trying to stay organized at the point
