Screen turn on by itself during navigation?

Why does my screen turn on by itself when I'm using Google driving directions? I never had this issue on my Droid 1.

Off or on? Mine stays on until I reach destination or end the navi

I want the screen off to save battery. I just navigate by voice direction. I can't seem to keep the screen off in navigation mode though
