Can you save sounds that are sent in messages and use them for alerts? If so, how?

Can you save sounds that are sent in messages and use them for alerts? If so, how?

To save a sound file on the Droid LONG PRESS on the file. An options menu will appear ad one of the choices is to save it. Then access your ringtones through the settings under Sound & display. Tried it but it wont let me LONG PRESS on the attachment. it just highlights and when i remove my finger it opens it up.
