Is there anything special about the s3 usb port in terms of the cables you can use with it? Will standard micro usb cables work?

Yeah, for MHL (which plugs into the microUSB and provides an HDMI out port), the S3 requires an adapter that has slightly different specs in order to work. But for standard charging and transfer via USB, any microUSB cable should work.
