It certainly looks like the 5-inch smartphone is moving closer to becoming a mainstream staple, rather than just a flash-in-the-pan trend. Following the excellent success of such devices as the Galaxy Note series and the new HTC Droid DNA (Butterfly), there is industry inel that at least five companies plan to offer a 1080p smartphone next year. The word is that sometime within the first six months of 2013 we will see 1080p devices from Samsung, Sony, LG, Huawei, and ZTE. It is certainly possible that these devices will not be 5-inches in size; however, going much smaller than that with a 1080p resolution would start to make the phone's display unreadable to most folks, making a 4.8-inch or larger highly likely. Here's a full quote with a few more details,

Samsung Electronics, Sony Mobile Communications, LG Electronics, Huawei Device and ZTE are expected to follow HTC and Sharp to roll out smartphones with 5-inch Full HD displays in the first half of 2013, according to industry sources.

HTC has launched its HTC Butterfly smartphone with a 5-inch Full HD, 440ppi panel from Japan Display (JDI), while Sharp's Aquos SH930W is equipped with a 5-inch 443ppi panel produced in-house.

While Samsung and LG will produce the Full HD panels in-house, Sony Mobile will be able access supplies from JDI, in which it holds a stake. Taiwan- and China-based smartphone vendors can purchase Full HD panels from JDI, Sharp or LG, the sources noted.

Keep in mind that the source of this info, DigiTimes, is infamous for getting things wrong from time to time. Still, they also get things right pretty often too, so it's worth filing in the back of your mind.

Last year, the general consensus about phone size was that 4-inches was the sweet spot for devices. Could 5-inches become the new norm next year? Share your opinion.
