What does it mean to root your phone? I keep seeing people post stuff about this, but I have no idea what it mean. Sorry, I understand this is probably a dumb question, but this is my first smartphone and I'm not real familiar with all the technical things that can be done with it.

Short Answer:
Rooting is "unlocking"/hacking the phone. It gives you access to everything on the phone. If you've heard of "jailbreaking" the iPhone, it's the same thing.
Edit: Some things you can get from rooting involves switching roms, being able to tether (without paying Verizon for it), overclocking the phone, etc.
