rooting droid/help wont work

Hi everyone I am new to the forum but know my device very well for a while now and I am trying to root my droid I have tried z4 root and unerversal androot z4 will just crash and androot always fails anysuggestions could it be a problem that I had to do a foctory recet about a month ago???
