Rooted. Need help with new Rom.

I'm coming from an original droid and flashing roms was really easy but now with the X I'm a little confused.

I'm rooted, have bootstrap installed, and now I want to try some custom roms. I'm currently at 2.3.3, do I have to flash to a different system version before I can install new roms?

I've done a lot or reading but can't seem to find the right information on this. Thanks for your help!

as long as you are on the right kernel version you can flash any ROM that uses the same kernel version. So a .602 based ROM can be flashed over anything .602 based provided you wipe data/cache/dalvik first. Same goes for any other kernel version
