ROMs Question

I just installed my first ROM for my Droid 4. I have installed ROMs on previous phones, but not very extensively, and it has been a while. "These days", do they auto-update? Or should I be watching a thread for updates and updating manually? Any tips or considerations I should keep in mind? Thanks.
