Rom Question

Im new to this whole DROID thing. I was just wondering.....? What is a "ROM"? What does it mean? Just trying to understand what people are talking about on some of the forums I read.

definition:Read Only Memory (ROM) is computer memory that can permanently store data and applications within it. There are various types of ROM with names like EPROM (Eraseable ROM) or EEPROM (Electrically Eraseable ROM).

but it allows you to use the droid with custom features made be developers that they ported from another phone. So in other words your droid will run like the nexus for example.

Thanks for the quick reply, I have a couple more to....What is "Smokedglass" and "Root" mean. Im just trying to understand the operation on this phone and how it runs. Not quite sure what apps to download. Thanks again!!!

They both look cool, I like the first one though. Are they apps? What exactly is it, or what do they do? Is it something thats recommened? Where do you find it?

no they are roms, you get them from rooting.

I do appreciate all you help! I did watch that video on the droid you posted. Very helpful. Not sure if I completly understand just yet what Im doing. I'll figure it out though......

if you truly understand and choose to root I can help you, but you need to understand what is going on. You will not be an expert because we all are still learning, but you need to understand the basics. Droid mod does it all for you but you should understand what they are doing to your device.

Do I need to root or unroot my droid? Not sure what im doing or what the purpose is to have it rooted or unrooted. Thats all!

Being rooted allows you access that normal users will not have to customize roms and themes. So to get smoked glass or allow your device to operate other roms you must be rooted.

Positives from rooting:
operate other roms, wifi tethering, overclock (allow your phone to operate faster by changing the processing speed), change the way your phone looks, add home screens, live wall papers.

Negatives:
void warranty, can brick your phone (less then .1% and brick phones can be recovered now), over clock cause your phone to drain more battery and increase in temperature. Can not get the ota update unless you unroot.

I hope this give more of a detailed pros/cons

Most of the negatives there is a work around. THe warranty issue (unroot you phone and remove all root folders before you take it to verizon)
battery temp increase you can o/c from 600-800 and the increase in temperature is probably less then 5 degrees.

Always here to help. I am not a computer/phone hacker. Just an avg joe who just want to do some cool stuff with my phone. I do not have the time to spend typing out 100+ commands to root or to read a book on the linux code. I have about an hour to play around with that stuff before going to bed for work tomo. So I found video guides and work arounds that allows me to do the same thing with out messing up my phone or spending hours on my phone getting frustrated.
