I don't think people have time to check the long list ring tones and select the most suitable one. Majority selects a tone once and then sticks with it throughout the life of smart phone. Teenagers however, have a different story.
I usually download a TV show theme song from YouTube and edit it with a ringtone editor all from the phone for my ringtones and have quagmire one liners for my notifications. It's something different

90% of the time I have my phone on vibrate, but when I do have the ringer on it's this. Cracks me up everytime:

Depends on your phone, but you can get Zedge or go on phonezoo(dot)com. Zedge is a free app on the android. Phonezoo is a website that offers free ringtones others have recorded as well as wallpapers and games.
My current ringtones are: "Wayward Son" from the supernatural soundtrack. // just a normal light beep for email. // "you have a uhh txt message" via the actor jensen ackles (dean from supernatural)
I use the beginning of "Hicktown" by Jason Aldean but I'm thinking about changing it to "So Called Life" by Montgomery Gentry. They both sound great. I used to have "Backwoods" by Justin Moore.
I ask my closer friends to pick a song. Then I clip a representative section of that song and set it up for that person's ring. I used the "song of the Volga boatmen" for work.
check it out.
I have individual mp3 tones set up for by most frequently called friends...thar way I know exactly who is calling and I can then decide to take the call or not. I also have a standard ringtone for all other calls..5FDP tune. But, like others here, the majority of the time my phone is on vibrate...
I believe at last count I had over 35 ringtones in use and another 10 or so in reserve...
