Ringtone won't stop

1. If I set a ringtone for text messages, either with the default text app or with something like Handcent, I am totally unable to get the thing to stop ringing before it plays out...COMPLETELY.
2. If I set a ringtone for phone calls, the only ways to get it to stop is to hit 'ignore', otherwise the tone must play completely.

Anyone know why this is happening/how to avoid? It is incredibly annoying to have a text come in and be unable to get it to stop ringing
