Rename system files without "Root Explorer"

I don't want to pay for it, simply because right now the only benefit that I can get from rooting my phone is to remove the DROID startup sound and camera shutter (these can't be quieted on the Pro).

Is there a free option?

I downloaded it, but when I open the box to rename the file, it changes back to .ogg after I rename it. I've tried .old and .bak as suggested.

EDIT: I've been in the menu and given root access.

EDIT2: For some reason if asked if I wanted write access the second time I went in. Granting this allowed me to do it.
