regular text messages coming in as picture messages in status bar

Recently some text messages are being displayed in my status bar as picture messages so instead of getting a preview of the message it just displays a little graphic that represents a picture message, even though these messages are regular text once I go to them to reply. Any idea why it would do this? Is anyone else having this happen to them? Oh and if it matters I am stock un-rooted and still locked though i intend to fix that soon DancingNexus

Have you tried clearing the cache of the Messaging App?

I have not but I will right now.

edit: I went into the app. manager and you can't clear the cache of the stock messaging app

I'm having the opposite problem. Just got an LG Lucid and one friend (with a two year old, non-droid, non-BB phone) is getting my texts as MMS and they are difficult for her to read. I'm not adding sound, just the occasional . No sounds, no nothing. I'm using "VZ Messages" at my text app...would that be doing it? We text a lot, so I need to resolve this for her.
