I have had this same issue & have been sent 3 replacement phones with the same issue! I have to make calls using the speaker phone... I have discovered that using my auxiliary cable with my vehicle allows me to make a call w/o using the speaker. I'm so beyond frustrated...customer service says i need a new SIM card. That about put me over the edge...
Welcome to the board both of you. I can hardly imagine why 3 in a row would have a problem with their speakers. Very odd. I don't know of a fix unfortunately
Hello and welcome to the DROID forums. Try plugging in a 3.5 mm plug into the headphone jack, and unplug it... do this a few time and it will probably solve your issue.
You could also try an app called speaker cleaner... that sometimes jars things back into working..
Another thing that will sometimes get things rolling is holding down the volume down and power until the phone shuts off.. its like a simulated battery pull..
Do you have a screen protector on your device?? If so... make sure the speaker hole at the bottom of the device(between the home and options keys) isn't blocked by it.

Had a similar failure today except I could not hear them, they could not hear me. It is a work issued phone and we are not a huge company but we do issue about 30 Verizon phones so they gave me a new one. It came with GB and I have posted a thread asking for help upgrading to ICS.
