Razr M & Handcent not playing GIF

I just got a Razr M. I primarily use Handcent but even on the stock messaging app if I am sent a GIF type file it does not play. Any suggestions as to why? If I have a gif file on my phone I can play it but when I send it off it doesn't play on the recipients phone either.
