Random question about flag displaying

If one were an american and was to set up a shop in another country, like Germany, what would be the proper etiquette for a flag pole? Would they need to display a German flag above the U.S. one? Would it be proper to display just the U.S. flag? I personally am not doing this but i was watching a show and made me think about it.

I would fly them at the same height and I think its to the left. Its either right or left, I can't remember...

Of course, if I was in Mexico, I would say screw it and just fly the US flag because they don't care about flag etiquette here...
