Question about Google Navigation

I know that you can download maps for off line use but I heard a rumor that you can use the newer versions using only gps and no data. Has anyone heard this? Since I have an older phone I still need data but that will change soon.

You can save a limited offline map or an entire route for use with the GPS. If you go off route it may hiccup.

I just tried use the app after turning off mobile data and Wi-Fi. I could see myself in the cached map data but could not enter in a place to get directions.

You would need to get the directions while connected and save the route. There are apps, (usually not free, at least the better ones), that will cache ALL the maps and allow you to use the GPS off-line. Look at Sygic for one..
