While I do believe you can get the Nexus One 'unlocked,' it was my understanding that you couldn't bring it over to Verizon. I may be wrong on that though...

You are correct droidfannd. The N1 currently runs only on GSM networks (AT&T - EDGE (2G), T-Mobile - 3G). They are planning on releasing a version of the N1 that works on CDMA networks like Verizon. Word is that should be here this spring sometime.
As far as apps go, you should just browse the market, find something you are interested in, install it, try it out, and get rid of it if you don't like it. Repeat.
