Programmed dialing string won't proceed

Anyone notice that when you extend a phone number with pauses so the droid will automatically enter a pin or "press 1 for XXX", it often fails to follow your programming. I've discovered that it seems to not know how to proceed when the display screen goes blank during the call but when I shake my phone and the display comes back on, it will go ahead and enter the numbers I programmed.

This is particularly annoying with voicemail. I programmed *86ppXXXX" XXXX=my PIN but it often just keeps saying "please enter your password" unless I shake it awake.
Anyone having this problem. Any fixes?
