Power/lock button issue

Hey guys, quick question. I've had this problem for about a week now where my phone will be locked with a black screen, and when I press the power button to start the unlocking process, the screen does not respond. Usually it takes about a full minute before I can actually get the phones screen to activate.

It doesn't seem to have this problem when plugged in, and it seems to get worse with lower battery levels. Any ideas?

It's weird because I tried to update the system to Gingerbread but it said my phone was up to date. Would it have done the update automatically? I don't believe anything on my phone has changed, so I doubt it has the newest software. And if so, why is my phone still intermittently having this problem?

But that makes sense about having apps open and constantly locking/unlocking, because I have a bad habit of doing that.
