I think it's not so plain and simple. I will use SPRecovery for a ROM install or a kernel install. For themes and the like, I would use CM because I'm lazy and don't like renaming the file.

SPR all the way. Straight easy and to the point. If you want to make life REALLY easy with SPR get a 2 Gig SD card and put the update.zip on it from your PC and then swap out when going to install a ROM or Kernel. When done just swap the SD Card out again and boot. So the whole renaming process is not even that much of a hassle.

We've provided more assistance for CW than SPR. SPR has never left me down.

everything you can do with spr you can do with cw. I prefer spr but it is only on the d1, the dev of cw ports his recovery image on multiple devices.

cw is trash and gives people tons of problems. SPR is solid as a rock
