phone speaker changed

I have not seen this reported by others. I loved the speaker function while on a call. sounded great, but all of a sudden the sounds are muffles and not understandable. speaker works fine for music and ringtones. phone use without speaker is the same (but I have always had slight problem with the volume when used this way)
any thoughts?
