phone shows roaming triangle

My phone started showing the little roaming triangle a week ago. I called Verizon and they tell me that the phone is in fact, NOT roaming, but can't explain why I get the triangle. It happened overnight and never before. Are there any apps that can mess that up? Running stock jb rooted. Has anybody experienced this? Thanks so much
