Phone contacts and Gmail contacts - RAZR

Apologies if a repeat - I've searched and cannot find answer to my particular problem.

When I add a new contact on my phone, it does not sync up to my Gmail contacts. How can I fix this?

When I add contacts in Gmail they do sync to my phone contacts, but not the other way around. Maddening...
