old droid x in south america

Hi. Not really sure where to post this but I figured it could go into a few areas.

I've been with verizon forever. I have an old droid x I got off ebay and used it with verizon for two years. Now i've had the razr maxx for the past yr and its awesome.

I'm traveling to Colombia, South America this week and I was wondering if i could take the droid x and drop in a claro or movistar sim card and use it as a phone there.

I have a global plan for verizon data and phone when I am there, but the calling/texting rates are outrageous. My understanding is that a sim card from there gives you a Colombian number to use and the rates are much cheaper (free incoming calls).

I guess my concern is that.. I think the Droid X is CDMA and I know Colombia runs GSM network. Do I need to unlock the phone? Is it even compatible?

Thanks, I am pretty ignorant about this stuff...
