In an unprecedented move Verizon is allowing Moto X 2nd Gen phones to be bootloader unlocked via the traditional method. You can now head on over to the Motorola developer site and it will generate a proper bootloader unlock code. I am still not sure if Verizon had any say in this matter, or if Motorola is just rebelliously sending out unlock codes.

This could be due to the fact that Motorola will not be officially updating the Moto X 2nd Gen on AT&T or Verizon going forward. This means that the only way to get Marshmallow on the phone would be to unlock the bootloader , install custom recovery, and flash a custom rom like CyanogenMod 13. For now developers are working on a way to get the Verizon variant phone to be converted into a Pure variant phone after the bootloader is unlocked so you can run any Pure rom you want.
