Numbers in text area box

Can anyone tell me what the small numbers that appear in a box that show up as I'm typing a text are? The seem to pop up on occasion during texting....

Yes, it is a countdown to the 160 something character limit on sending ...

Thanks that makes sense now, is the a way to hide it while imputing text?

If you are using Handcent SMS you can. Menu->settings->display message counter. Not sure about Chomp or the stock messaging app.
