Notification for a new email (Gmail)

I have my Gmail notification sent to silent. When I receive a new email I still get an audible alert. The audible alert I am hearing is the notification i chose in settings even though I have set my Gmail alert to silent.
Am I doing something wrong? Anyone else experiencing this problem.
