not able to use notification ringtones

i use zedge to download notification ringtones, but even after i select one to be my notification ringtone, an android ringtone is what i hear. if i dowload a regular ringtone from zedge and set that for a contact, it works fine. i also use ringtone maker app to make my own ringtones and they work perfectly, but when i use it for the notification ringtones, it still does not work.
