new to rooting

I am big on computer and gaming mods but have never been up to the task of rooting. Seems like a hassle in a way to delete bloatware and possibly brick my phone. Im running 2.3.4 with hboot .98

I have read the downgrade postings and the quick root postings but am still a little warry on weather its worth it or time consuming. Any help would be great before i make a grave mistake.
