The HiFi Audio manufacturer, Onkyo, is set to release their first Android app that lets you operate a smattering of their home-theater systems using your Android smartphone. As well as using your Android as a remote, the Onkyo Remote App also lets you browse content and stream audio from your Android. It is designed to work with the TX-8050 and all Onkyo A/V network receivers released this year. The app is scheduled to be launched in August. Here's the full press release:
Onkyo Announces Remote App for Android

UPPER SADDLE RIVER, NJ (7/25/11) -- Home audio specialist, Onkyo, demonstrates its ongoing commitment to greater convergence in home entertainment with the announcement of its first application for the Android mobile platform. Onkyo's Remote App for Android will allow owners to integrate wireless audio from an Android-based device into their Onkyo home theater system, and provides a range of remote control functions.

Operating over a wireless local network, the application will allow Onkyo owners to stream music stored on an Android device to an Onkyo network audio system. Music played through an Onkyo system gains far greater power and fidelity.

Users will be able to browse networked content without needing to view on-screen menus on a connected display. Instead, they will use the touch-screen GUI on their Android device to navigate menus and control a variety of functions, such as selecting the input source or adjusting the volume and tone. Furthermore, users will be able to control output in individual zones in a multi-room distributed audio set-up.

Available in August as a free download from the Android market, the Remote App for Android will be compatible with all of Onkyo's network A/V receivers released in 2011, as well as with the TX-8050 stereo network receiver.

Niceeeeeee onkyo AV equipment is the best

Although I do like Onkyo this receiver doesnt hold a candle to my Pioneer Elite. I hope other manufacturers follow suit...

Indeed I have the Pioneer Elite 55" flatscreen. By far best picture I have ever seen on a TV. I do however have it hooked up to an integra receiver which is made by Onkyo. I have all my stuff hooked up on the inferred system so I can use a remote anywhere in the house to turn stuff on and off. It's nice, I wonder if I can use my phone now to do that.

So the receiver basically uses a wifi plug-in that uses the usb port. It then connects to your wifi router, and to your phone on wifi.

Good if you wifi for service from home.

I myself have a motorola bluetooth a2dp receiver that plugs into my stereo receiver and I can stream music or any audio from my phone that way wirelessly.

Couple options out there - good find dgstorm.

Its not really a plug in..most of the newer avr's from onkyo are network ready.. I use a 3rd party app for my ipad..its great...it allows me to completely control the avr and all of its functions....granted my harmony remote does a fine job, but the ipad app brings all of the receiver info to the ipad...it makes using xm/sirius easier..it also makes the dlna playback from my server awesome..it makes searching for music so much easier. its a new receiver for me so im still setting it up....playing with presets and speaker frequencies...the app makes setting all of these options a breeze.

The app that onkyo has for the ipad is pretty lame..but heres to hoping the droid version is a little snappier..if not..hopefully some 3rd party dev will spruce it up

Do you run ethernet cable or does it have wifi built in?

I have a cable run to the avr as it does not have wifi built in..(tx-nr609). Im not sure about the other high end models. I do know that Onkyo has wifi adapters for them though. Not sure if a standard wifi bridge would work.

Anyone running this on ICS? And more specifically, on the Bionic? I have been loving this app until upgrading, now the display is shifted off to the right adn I can't get to the fuctions like selecting an internet radio station.
