Network extender and wifi download

I purchased the network extender from verizon to help with my poor signal in my house. It works great five bars all the time. I'm having some trouble using wifi with my phone now. I thought I understood that the extender acted as a cell tower in your house and used the phone frequency to communicate with your phone and then puts your call through your high speed Internet. When I turn wifi on my droid x on and try to access the Internet I can't. Am I mistaken when I believe that the extender uses the phone frequency? I would like to understand something in can use both at the same time. (For example the Roku wifi remote)

Have you plugged your cable or DSL into the extender or did you plug the extender into your wireless router

I have it connected to a router right after my cable modem.
