Need to teather - alternative to paying the VZW $20?

+1 for PDANet.

However, if you are on Froyo, I believe they included USB tethering by default (for free too!!).

Not sure tho, because I am root so...

EasyTether

I'm using EasyTether and am happy with it. I'm in a location with a weak signal, so I tried PDANet also to see if there was a difference. There wasn't. Except EasyTether is only 10 bucks. They're actually both free unless you want to access secure sites.

Hey guys - going on vacation where I will not have internet access but for my phone. On blackberry I had a sweet Tether app (Tether BlackBerry | BlackBerry Modem | Tether I think) and it would allow tethering w/o VZW takin' all ma' moneyz.

So anyway- I need to tether this laptop to the Droid by this Saturday. I could turn on the VZW tethering for the week and get it pro-rated, but I'd like a more permanent solution anyway without paying $240 a year!

Any help is greatly appreciated!

ROOT your phone...

Ther are two apps that work decently. Easy Tether Pro($9.99 in the market place) there is a light version but it only does non secure types, so you can't go to yahoo mail, or anything that requires a log-in. There is also PDAnet. This has a light versions that lets you try it for free for 10 days. After that it only goes to non secure types. The paid version is 29.99 in the market place. Both suffer from drops at times, but that is mainly due to verizon rather than the app itself. Sometimes the app drops and that of course is the apps fault. Both can stream up to 1.2Mbps, but I average about 750 Kbps.. so on the lower range of broadband. They both give you detailed instructions on what to do.

Hope this helps.

yeah pdanet will work so does easy tether if you plan on using the usb cable.. did you want to wifi tether?? with the "wifi tether" app you don't have to install drivers and setup your pc like your would with PDAnet and easy tether. I don't think you need root to use it either.. correct me if i'm wrong guys.

i just paird my droid2 with the laptop and created a dun connection, same as i always have with my BB, unlimited data plan, i canceled my 3g hotspot. save the 20 bucks a month

i have see posts around were it said to use "123" for the number ( wouldnt initialize the com port ) "#777" did.

Definitely need root.

I just got pdaNet for 18 on sale from 30.

Sent from my DROIDX using Tapatalk

PDANET does not require root access... see below text from the "LITE" version APP .....

PdaNet allows your computer to go online through the Android phone's Internet connection. Supports USB Tether and Bluetooth DUN. No root access needed. No tether plan required. Works on ALL Android phones. Mac&PC.

Have you considered easyroot? If you check out the website you can get a code for 99 cents then you just download the app from the market and it roots your phone with just a push of a button. Very easy to do and then you can download the wireless tether programs for free. Thats a lot cheaper then 10-30 dollars; And you can go to secure sites all you want. Just a thought!

I just got an iPod Touch (4th Gen) I'd love to be able to leech off the Droid's 3G connection. Not paying $20 a month to do it though...
