Need to teather - alternative to paying the VZW $20?

Hey guys - going on vacation where I will not have internet access but for my phone. On blackberry I had a sweet Tether app (Tether BlackBerry | BlackBerry Modem | Tether I think) and it would allow tethering w/o VZW takin' all ma' moneyz.

So anyway- I need to tether this laptop to the Droid by this Saturday. I could turn on the VZW tethering for the week and get it pro-rated, but I'd like a more permanent solution anyway without paying $240 a year!

Any help is greatly appreciated!

I just got my phone yesterday ... including the hotspot service ... but when I tried it this morning ... did NOT work.....I must be doing something wrong.

The laptop connected to the hotspot but it said limited or no connectivity....would display any websites. :(

Any thoughts? Anyone has this issue?

Did you pay for it? What phone do you have? As fas as I know the phone that come with tethering and WiFi Hotspot do so with the caveat that you have to pay for the service with Verizon. Assuming you are on Verizon, but since you didn't tell us what phone you have we are just stabbing in the dark.

If you are rooted then there is no question.

Yeah not sure about the other guy, but what are my options?

Is "rooting" dangerous in any way? Is it complicated?

Do a search for rooting. There are a fistful of threads that will tell you everything you need to know and will most likely answer your questions as well.

um, yes. As I said the laptop is connecting to the hotspot....but no internet connectivity. The phone allows tethering or I wouldn't be asking. It's a Droid X. Stab away.

root your phone through one of the many tutorials posted in the forums for your specific model of droid, then download the free 'Android Tether for Root Users' app from the marketplace. It works very well.

Sorry. I'll be sure and not help you as well if I get the chance.

Maybe you should consider actually paying for the service provided.

Apologies for sidetracking YOUR thread will do some further testing/research and post separately.

Apology accepted. Its pretty standard forum etiquette to just post your own thread. Your issues have little to do with my questions.

Understand and I apologize for the off-topic I'm just finding my way around here.
