Need help recovering text message

My sister gave me her x with strict instructions to not delete a text message she needed. I contact the local Verizon store and they tell me to activate the phone, don't sync contacts, forward the msg to my sis, then im good to go.
So I activate the phone then go to txt messages to forward to sis but it's not there.
Can anyone help me? Is the message somewhere on the phone?
One thing I forgot to mention...I backed up her sd card before I activated the phone.
Any suggest?

I didn't use an app...just used usb cable and connected to laptop.

So you didn't do a nandroid backup? Or were the messages on her memory card?

No. Didn't do an android backup. Did what the guy at Verizon told me to do. Obviously the text message was in the phones memory. Did the phone perform a hard reset when I activated it? Is that why the message isn't there?

If it did do a hard reset I'm not sure you can get it back unless I'm wrong.

No but you probably can't retrieve it if it's not there.

It gets stored in data in the phone memory I believe.

If there was a reset done or an activate and reboot, it might have screwed you up.
