How often should one make a backup?

Is it just a matter of booting into SPRecvoery and performing a full backup?

Whats SPRecovery? and how do you boot into it?

It is an advanced recovery console for the android OS that was written by a developer. It is an tool that is used to back up your rooted droid and launch/install custom roms.
