I'm not sure how or why but my screen completely shattered. There is a significant pressure point right where the earpiece is and cracks spread from there throughout. I tried jogging my memory to see where/why/how this happened and the only explanation is that I slammed the car door onto it while it was sagging in my loose fitting gym shorts. But I checked the scene after the fact and there is a good 6 inches from the seat to the door so this is unlikely.
I took it to the local Verizon store and they offered me a couple "deals." I could either buy it at the one year price with three accessories, which would have totaled to almost $400 or buy it at full retail price.
As a college student, there was no way this was an option so they offered to call Customer Service for me and they offered me a Like-New full body replacement for $50. Compared to the previous "deals" this was a no-brainer.
Moving on, how can I prevent such disasters in the future? A protective case couldn't prevent this issue since it was clearly a screen defect.
