Missing Audio Channel on YouTube Stereo track

We have 3 new Verizon Wireless Motorola Droids, and was just playing back a YouTube video with a known stereo audio track. Noticed in the Droid external speaker only one channel (left) was playing. Put on my stereo headphones and to my amazement, figured out that only the left channel plays back, even through through both channels of the stereo headphones. The Droid is playing a stereo audio track back with the left channel of the source in both channels of the Droid audio hardware!

Not the device - we have 3 Droids and they all do it. Not the headphones. They are fine. Not the source - it plays back in stereo on any PC.

Why does the Droid not at least combine both channels of the stereo audio track into a composite mono track instead of just dropping one channel and then routing the left to both channels?

Better yet, why doesn't it just playback such video audio tracks in stereo in the first place?

Is this a bug? Surely it wasn't designed like this.
