As mentioned at Google I/O android devices will have the ability to mirror straight to Chromecast. Users of Google L preview already had a chance to try it out but now Google has sent out an update so other devices running 4.4 and above can mirror their devices to their Chromecast. If you own a Nexus 5, Nexus 4, Nexus 10, Nexus 7 2013, Note 3, S4, S4 GPE, S5, Note 10, HTC M7, M7 GPE, LG G2, and LG G3 you should be able to try it out when the Chromecast is updated to 1.7.7. Those with a Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 2013 should be able to try it now without the Chromecast app. Be patient if it does not work right away your Chromecast will need to update as well in order for it to work. The first time I tried it could not find my device. After my Chromecast rebooted and updated itself it worked. Be mindful this is still in beta mode so it will probably fail/disconnect after a minute or so.
I know, same here. I remember when the Roku gave devices the ability to play videos directly from their phones onto their TV's. It supported the S4, the S3, HTC One, blah blah blah, but didn't support the Galaxy Nexus.
I bought Juice to alleviate that issue.
Now when I got the Moto X, a newer phone, surely Roku will allow video playback from my device.
Nope!

In the Play Store the latest version is 1.5.5 which does not work with my Note 3, yet I've read some folks already have version 1.7.4. How is that possible?

Google do not roll out an update all at one time this keeps from one overloading the servers and two if there is an issue they can fix it before it has reached every ones device. They do this with not only software updates but google apps as well.

Dang, I want to try this! I wish my chromecast didn't stop working with my wifi altogether . My laptop and phone connect to it just fine in set up, but it just cannot connect to wifi anymore. Gotta give google a call about that warranty..
Not at the moment. At Google I/O they said that we would be able to connect with a cellular signal or through the cloud. But that feature wouldn't come until later this year
