mic in headphone jack?

Somewhere I got the impression thst you could plug a microphone into the headphone jack, but I have been unable to get this to work. I'm not talking about a mic/headphone set, just a stereo mic.

Is this possible?
Is it a setting I'm missing, or something app specific?
What about usb mics?

I assume it would b, but u would need the 'mic' goldbring thing to match up with where they r on the head sets. I would think anyway, I'm not sure on that

I doubt you can connect a stereo mic since the mic input on the Droid is mono. Make sure the connector is wired properly. A standard mic won't be using the correct conductors on its jack.
