Lost root, bootloader unlocked, can I do a factory reset?

I want to get back to stock after flashing the 4.0.4 update. I tried to restore but I have lost root and can not flash into recovery. I only get the android on his back with an exclamation warning above him. If I push power/volume up/down I go to a screen that offers apply update from cache, and wipe data factory reset. I am fine with a factory reset, but worry that since I have an unlocked bootloader I could have issues. What can I do to either find my backup of the stock rom and or am I ok to reset factory in this state.
Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

A factory reset won't put you back on 4.0.2. You'll need to fast boot flash the boot.img. Or you could fast boot flash clockwork recovery and try restoring a nandroid
