Lager Community Support?

I bought my OGDroid back in Jan of 2010 and I am ready for an upgrade... I thought about the Bionic but then discovered the Nexus device that is coming soon. Also there is an HTC phone that might be the real deal now too.

One of the best things about the OGDroid was the community. I remember staying up until 3AM posting with a hand full of other guys in the UltimateDroid thread just waiting for the new ROM to be released. I loved to flash ROMS over and over just to try them out, Kernels to improve performance and battery life, and Themes... Themes were/are so cool, aren't they? Well anyways, its time to update soon and I think that it's sad to see the OGDroid community split up among all these high-end devices that are appearing right about this time (2 years after the OGDroid changed the game).

I see that the Bionic forum is healthy and plenty of threads to explore. I did not see a great place to ask this question but I figured this forums is prob the most active and the largest. Feel free to move this to a more appropriate area.

I was just wondering what you all thought about the community moving forward. Will the Bionic have the largest community support? How about the HTC (Vigor maybe it wil be called)? Dont forget about the Nexus device that has been the center of most rumors lately. Will the Nexus have a sizable community? Anything is better than the D2G community. Its just a difficult phone to work with and im definately not bashing anyones work. They have had some pretty amazing success (themer.zip to convert D2 to D2G).

What do you think?

Whatever has an unlocked bootloader is going to attract the largest developer support (that's my opinion right or wrong!!). I've read that the Samsung Nexus will be unlocked. Don't know about the Prime (well to tell the truth I don't know if the Nexus and Prime are two phones or one.)

Good luck.

IMO a lot of developers have picked up the Bionic and are hacking away at it.....within the first week of release there was a very alpha-ish build of CM7 up and running on it. While the Bionic is still pretty new, Team Black Hat is hacking away at the Bionic to root the upcoming OTA....there are already several custom roms for it and I expect (hope) the community to continue to grow.

That said I do also expect to see a lot of people flock to the Galaxy Nexus as the unlocked bootloader will be very popular.

Nexus/Prime are the same phone. Did I just blow your mind?

I never thought about the bootloader. It never occurred to me that that was a big deal. I remember a big fuss when moto said NoNo to unlocked bootloaders and couldnt understand why everyone was upset about it. I get it now. YAY UNLOCKED BOOTLOADERS!

I picked the d1 over the g1 the dx over the incredible and the bionic over the prime and thunderbolt .... moto is just better

Whoa, whoa, whoa, let's not get ahead of ourselves. I love my bionic to death (coming from the tbolt), but i won't say it is better than the samsung galaxy nexus because it isn't out yet. Plus it is a dev phone! I have been saving up for it, but i won't buy it until i see the reviews!

has anyone owned a nexus device before? I have not heard much about the custom market for them. I always thought the phones were amazing but never heard much about the modding going on.

I never got a chance to own a nexus. I was wanting the nexus 1 when it came out, but it never came to verizon! They are dev phones(meant to be rooted and played with) they are also forst priority when it comes to updates.

You don't mod a Nexus. It's Vanilla and awesome out of the box!

Yup a Nexus is a Google Experience Device (GED) (pure Google, no manufacturer skin). GEDs are easily unlocked and easy to modify.

these are the biggest question marks... Will developers support the Bionic because many of us have purchased it? Or are locked bootloader/higher specifications going to determine support? Will the Bionic get ICS? When it does will Motorola unlock its bootloader?

Nobody knows...

For now the Bionic does 95% of what I wanted. Not happy with the speaker, camera, or screen to some extent but loving the speed, the videochatting, the NFLN app and have accepted the mediocre battery life (the best battery life of all LTE smartphones).

Moto wont be unlocking bootloaders, yes it will see ICS, and devs will support whatever phone is best for them.
