keyboard not lighting up

I've noticed on my D3 that if I have it on auto brightness and any kind of light hits the sensor by the from facing camera that the screen will brighten but the keyboard will go out. Vice versa if no light hits the screen. If you turn auto brightness off and set it yourself the keyboard says lit up with the screen but may time out shortly be4 the main screen.
