It's Official, Google Has Acquired Motorola Mobility

Last week we reported that China had given the thumbs up to Google's proposed acquisition of Motorola Mobility and that the deal was expected to close this week. Well that looks to be exactly what happened. Google Inc's CEO, Larry Page, just announced on the company's official blog this morning that its acquisition of Motorola Mobility has closed.

The phones in our pockets have become supercomputers that are changing the way we live. It’s now possible to do things we used to think were magic, or only possible on Star Trek--like get directions right from where we are standing; watch a video on YouTube; or take a picture and share the moment instantly with friends.
It’s why I’m excited to announce today that our Motorola Mobility deal has closed. Motorola is a great American tech company that has driven the mobile revolution, with a track record of over 80 years of innovation, including the creation of the first cell phone. We all remember Motorola’s StarTAC, which at the time seemed tiny and showed the real potential of these devices. And as a company who made a big, early bet on Android, Motorola has become an incredibly valuable partner to Google.


Sanjay Jha, who was responsible for building the company and placing that big bet on Android, has stepped down as CEO. I would like to thank him for his efforts and am tremendously pleased that he will be working to ensure a smooth transition as long-time Googler Dennis Woodside takes over as CEO of Motorola Mobility.
I’ve known Dennis for nearly a decade, and he’s been phenomenal at building teams and delivering on some of Google’s biggest bets. One of his first jobs at Google was to put on his backpack and build our businesses across the Middle East, Africa, Eastern Europe and Russia. More recently he helped increase our revenue in the U.S. from $10.8 billion to $17.5 billion in under three years as President of the Americas region. Dennis has always been a committed partner to our customers and I know he will be an outstanding leader of Motorola. As an Ironman triathlete, he’s got plenty of energy for the journey ahead--and he’s already off to great start with some very strong new hires for the Motorola team.


It’s a well known fact that people tend to overestimate the impact technology will have in the short term, but underestimate its significance in the longer term. Many users coming online today may never use a desktop machine, and the impact of that transition will be profound--as will the ability to just tap and pay with your phone. That’s why it’s a great time to be in the mobile business, and why I’m confident Dennis and the team at Motorola will be creating the next generation of mobile devices that will improve lives for years to come.

The mobile world will be watching this one very carefully. Where this merger will go and what will come out of it is yet to be seen, but the fact remains that this is a very exciting time for both Google and Motorola.

I hope Google decides to stick its hands in the business of Motorola and fix a few things.

I hope that one of two things happen.

A) That Google makes their own carrier service while still allowing other carriers to have the ability to sell authorized Android OS
or
B) That somehow their new plans to sell their phones direct from the play store thus bypassing the carriers sale of the phone, will cause the carriers to stop getting too big for their Briches. (AKA Verizon trying to Indian Give our Unlimited Data)

I Honestly hope that they create their own carrier that has awesome reception and Unlimited data.
I would love nothing more than to stick it to Verizon and go somewhere else.

Honestly if sprint had better coverage.... I would have already jumped. Or if Verizon does actually ever get rid of my Unlimited Data.... I will get rid of them.

I hope item #1 on the agenda is to unlock all bootloaders for Moto phones. Do away with Blur and run pure android. Motor builds awesome phones that are hogtied with dumb restrictions and software.

I hope item #1 on the agenda is to unlock all bootloaders for Moto phones. Do away with Blur and run pure android. Motor builds awesome phones that are hogtied with dumb restrictions and software.

I rather like the latest "not-Blur" Blur honestly. Vanilla android is just too, well, vanilla for me.

However unlocked bootloaders should definitely be a first priority. Perhaps the acquisition was why Moto backpedaled on their promise in the first place, to wait until it was finished.

Yall whine to much. Just drop Verizon and go with AT&T or T-Mobile. Or Sprint, which ever one. If Yall honestly believe that Verizon is just now starting to disrespect its customers, then yall are mistaken. This is nothing new to Verizon Wireless. Verizon is the most greedy carrier out of the 4.

Googles should just full on, come out with a VOLTE network, nationwide. Just put up like 5000 towers in like 2 weeks(another 1000 every week till they have the best coverage)! Release like 4-5 great VOLTE phones SG3/HTC One X/Sony Expria.....(what ever there highest end is)/SGN being 4 of them,I guess im just dreaming! :hail:

I'm dreading the day of VOLTE networks. I have the feeling they're going to switch too fast and it'll be like the early years of ubiquitous cell phone usage. Spotty coverage. I enjoy being able to voice call nearly anywhere.
