Issues sending text messages to "+1" numbers

I have a Droid 2 Global that I recently transferred to from a global Blackberry. Since I periodically travel internationally, I always program my contacts with the country code prefix (ie +1 for all US numbers) in case I decide to purchase a local sim chip I can still call all my contacts without changing the dialing scheme. The problem I have noticed is I cannot send a text message to any contact as long as the +1 is before their area code. Picture messages go through fine with the +1 prefix, but text messages are affected. I can remove the +1 and everything works fine. I can also dial 001 and the area code for US numbers and the text messages work fine. I am wondering if others with the Droid 2 Global are having this same issue? If some people have the time, I would appreciate it if you would try to manually enter a person's number whom you text often but add the +1 before the area code and see if you can still send the message or if it fails. None of my Blackberry phones never had any issues with the +1, and even my old Razr handled +1 text messages without issues. I have brought this issue up directly with Verizon Global Support, but I am hoping that if this is not an isolated issue, to get the attention of Google so they can fix their coding mistake. Thanks in advance!

Some more info about my device

I am currently running the default Verizon ROM, and the phone is rooted with the Z4Root app. I unrooted the phone as well and the problem was still prevalent, so I don't believe it is a problem with it being rooted

Bump. Now the phone is sending question marks in between characters ie a text being sent as "hello" shows up as "?h?e?l?l?o?" The person receiving the text has an iPhone. I am starting to regret switching to a Droid. I never had problems like this with my Blackberry phones. I have had nothing but problems since I got this phone, and needing to always carry a charger around with it is somewhat of an inconvenience

Come on guys, 104 reads and no one has had the 30 seconds it would take to send a text manually instead of from your contact list. All you have to do is enter a +1 then the area code and number and try to send a text that you were planning to send anyways. Hopefully someone can give me a hand in troubleshooting this problem.

Thanks everyone for all the help....oh wait nobody offered any except one! I figured out the problem myself. The Verzion Andriod software build was coded improperly during its development. That is why there is a problem. Its not just my phone, I have tried it on a few other Verizon Androids phone and they all fail too. T-Mobile Android phones send the text messages fine.

+1

Same thing happened to me it was because some facebook linked phone numbers were +1(areacode)(number) they were locked and I cound not change. I created another number for the person (without the +1 and my text went through. Not sure why the facebook number had a +1 embeded either. Seems a bit quirky

The software techs I spoke with from Verizon confirmed that it should work with the +1. All other phones handle it fine however there is an issue with coding the of the Verizon build of the Android platform. I brought this issue up to their technical support department and it is in the process of being sent to Google to be corrected. There will have to be a software update or a patch to fix the incorrect coding. I doubt there will be any fix in the near future. Unfortunately enough people won't complain about it to get it fixed in a timely manner.

Google is usually pretty responsive considering the Android is a free open source platform.
DroidForum members are also usually pretty responsive and helpful. I have notice that the Droid 2 Global is not such a popular device so maybe out of the number of reads maybe no had a solution to suggest.

That very well could be. I joined this forum looking for the help from the knowledge of others while I was troubleshooting my issue. I didnt get much of a response, so i decided to try and take care of it on my own. Turns out I was able to borrow my friends phones here locally and test everything out to confirm it wasn't isolated to solely the Droid 2 Global. Come to find out it only affects the Verizon build of the Android platform. It didn't get to test it with phones other than Motorola phones so I'm not sure whether it affects the Samsung or HTC phones, but if I was guessing I'd say it does. T-Mobile phones have no issue with it.

I've been having issues with my phone doing this too and I'm on a samsung fascinate from verizon

That now confirms what I assumed earlier. It is affecting all Verizon Android phones. Hopefully Google and Verizon will get together and figure this out. Since their solution is to just remove the "+1" before the area code, I highly doubt they are in any hurry to correct their mistake. I guess we will just have to wait and see.

i actually found a temporary fix to this.

i downloaded and installed Handcent SMS. all the issues i was having with my contacts earlier with the stock messaging service are gone.

i havent tried Go SMS or Chomp SMS, but its possible they might work as well.

now i also did save all of my contact numbers without the +1 and selected those numbers to be default. that didnt help with the stock messaging service but could be the deciding factor for Handcent.
