Is the screen really that terrible?

Finally going to jump for an upgrade for my beloved (but showing its age) OG Droid. I'm amped on the X2, and honestly don't feel like waiting for the Bionic (and I can just sell the X2 and pay retail for the Bionic if I feel so inclined.)

Anyway, every review I've ever read tears every Pentile-based phone's screen apart. I just wanted to get some feedback. Am I going to notice the jump from the OG's incredible screen to the X2? Did you guys get used to it?

I went from the OG Droid to Droid X2...

I'm sure your mileage may vary, but I definitely noticed the inferior screen. Color representation is bad. The greens in the Android Market for example don't render right, and scrolling up and down on certain websites with certain color combinations are terrible. There's a very distinct blurriness that hurts the eyes if you stare at it on those websites.

Maybe you won't notice it, but I know I did.

The thing is, I don't think even the Bionic will be immune. I could be wrong, but initial reports seem to think that the Bionic will have a similar screen. The trade-off (positive?) here is that supposedly, the screen may be less demanding on battery life. That may very well be true, but that's really on you to see if you can live with it.

Dude I think the PenTile is beautiful! Its not oversaturated or pixelated. And doesn't have that bluish tint samoleds seem to have. Go for it!

both of droidfreak28's points are valid...

Compared to a Samsung screen, it is definitely not oversaturated and does not have that cool blue tint their screens skew towards.

However, seeing as how the Original Poster is coming from the Original Droid, the pentile screen is definitely a step down. The original droid's screen was also devoid of oversaturation and that blue tint, however, colors were accurate and the screen quality was very sharp. That said, if you compare the DX2 screen vs the original Droid side by side, you'll definitely see more of a pixelation and inferior quality of the DX2's screen, not to mention the inferior color reproduction.

I think the DX2 screen looks fantastic. Of course I apparently am not that picky about these type of things given all of the complaints about it. But then I don't use a magnifying glass when looking at my phone's screen either.

Typed on my DX2, most likely in landscape mode.

No, the PenTile isn't that bad. Just picked up an X2 yesterday as part of a buy1get1 (could have chosen the droid3...front-facing camera was tempting) upgraded from an OG droid myself. I find no faults with the screen.

Coming from a D2 and fighting with bifocal issues, I think it's a GREAT screen! Occasionally I notice some pixilation and some none-perfectness. But it doesn't give me a headache to read for long periods of time like the D2 did.

JMHOYMMV

Thanks guys.

I'm not really super excited to be upgrading, I just kind of want to take advantage of the BOGO for my girlfriend and I. I guess I'll just have to check it out in store and see if I can deal with it.

Yeah the best advice is to just go to a store or find a friend who has a pentile screen and check it out.

I personally am not bothered by it at all. It's only noticeable if you look for it on purpose i find.

I came from a OG DROID to the DROID 3 and I love the pentile screen. It seemed weird at first but it doesn't glare as easily and I have the brightness turned almost all the still see great in the sunlight.

I have excellent eyesight, and after using an X2 and owning an X I can definitively say the X2 screen is nicer. It's more vibrant, brighter, and the resolution difference is a noticeable improvement.

^^^These.

My wife got X2 and yes, there is a lack of absolute glassiness. You'll not think that it has a 1080p plasma display. But the colors are nice, the resolution is good and the outdoor visibility is excellent. Indoors it is always on the lowest brightness setting and is is bright and vibrant. If you are severely scrutinizing the display's every aspect, I expect you would be disappointed. But for every day use, especially in situations that would make other screens hard to see (like sunny outdoors), I think the Pentile is very nice indeed.

I have MANY complaints about the DX2, but the screen isn't one of them. To me, it looks great. Comparing the DX and the DX2 side-by-side when I first got it, I was very happy with the new screen. I don't see the issues with the green that everyone else does, but since there are plenty of people who swear they don't have the audio issues that I do, I will take their word for it that they have issues that I don't. Maybe some screens are worse than others?

I do seem to see more of a "lossy" effect in the background of Angry Birds, but I haven't compared side-by-side with the DX I still have in the house here to see if that is limited to the DX2.

To the OP, you should carefully review the threads in this section about the DX2, the screen would be the least of my concerns.

i came from the og droid and find the x2 screen way better then the og droid the screen was my biggest worry about the x2 as my local store didnt have a x2 display model so i got it anyways and thought wow.......i dont see any of the isues these others talk about other then one thing the blur i did notice slight ghosting in bright green colors when they are moving fast.

Picked my X2 up today, and the display is pretty terrible compared to the Droid. However, it's only really noticeable with certain colors, and the speed of it is blowing me away. I love it.

Just my luck that I buy it the day news comes out about the SGII. :[
