Install of stock android apps such as the messaging app on the nexus

I would like to use stock android apps such as the calendar and messaging apps on the nexus. Is it as simple as rooting and renaming the vanilla android messaging apk to what samsung calls theirs and placing it in system apps? Has anyone done this on the original Samsung Touchwiz rom rooted without flashing anything and where would i get the vanilla android apks from?

You can try. Not all AOSP apks will work but some should. And you can pull them from an ICS gapps package. If you can't find it, I'll link to one later.

Thank you. Has anyone had any success with this? I am mainly interested in the aosp messaging app. I believe samsung calls their app secsms.apk or secmms.apk in touchwiz. If you could provide the link that would be greatly appreciated.
