I'm new to smart phones, what are your favorite apps?

Hi guys, I'm new to the world of smart phones. I was wondering what some good apps were. Just anything, let me know what you like, just to give me an idea of where to start.

I'm young, so I want some fun apps, but I live on my own, so some apps with functionality would be good too.

Thanks :)

Welcome!
Some apps I enjoy are Angry Birds, Lookout Mobile Security, Cordy, Thunderstorm live wallpaper, Moonchaser, Cut the Rope, and Pinball HD. If you have any questions feel free to ask!
By the way, what phone do you have?

Haha, yes, I have Angry Birds already :) my friend in class had it, and when she couldn't pass a level, she would have me do it, so I got addicted. It was my first app.

I have an LG Optimus

I love angry birds. All of them. The regular, Seasons, Rio.
WordFued.
Twitter app (trying out some others).
Droidforums app (yes for this forum)
Astro file manager, helps me file my items away and find them. I use it to find the TV shows I convert and watch at lunch.
Selftimer light (a camera app)
Movies by Flixter, shows what's coming up in the theares
Movies Free, keeps track of my DVDs, has a scanner for easy entry.
TV Guide to see what's on tv.
Gentle Alarm
Silent Time to shut off my sounds except from important people

I think those are the ones I use most of the time.

More ideas:
If you could only have/recommend 5 APPS ? start from the last page for the newest. Then when you have your top 5, add to the discussion.

this is where I learned what a Widget was. I think it's a great page. The first few pages are older, so if you want, start from the end.

Must Have Apps STICKY lots of ideas and links in this one (including the links above).

Wasn't feeling Angry Birds, but a lot of my friends like it. My five top apps on my phone (excluding some of my stock apps) would be -\
1: GO apps - eg. Go text, Go Launcher Ex, Go Dialer and Go Contacts. Really awesome, customizable, friendly interface etc.
2: Plume - imo the best twitter app.
3: Doodle Jump - Had to pay for this one, fantastic game for passing time.
4: Widget Locker - Had quite a boring lock screen, now i'm in love with it, as Widget Locker lets you completely customize your lock screen.
5: WhatsApp Messenger - Basically an SMS service, but its through internet, this has saved me SO much money, such a life saver!

Those are just the top 5, but there are plenty of great apps.

Thank you! I have been wondering how you change the lock screen

No worries :) It'll cost you a couple of dollars, but it's totally worth it, seriously.

Yea, there are a few things I want already that costs money. Weather Widgets is one of them, and that phone locator too, that looks good to have

I have a Optimus too. :D. I love it. A word up on Adobe Flash, they think the Optimus is too slow for the flash player. Hopefully, they'll change. But some of my fave apps are SOMETIMES pointless. Here are some: Ringdroid, GO launcher ex, iRunner, and MYAndroid Protection.

DebDroid1a - You said Movies Free is what you use to manage your DVDs. I googled it and can't find it. Is there another name or do you have a link to it? I have about 450 DVDs and would love to have them cataloged on my Droid X. Thanks for the help.

New, too

Just found a nice favorite contact manager for my new Droid Charge called Animated Widget Contact Pro at www.android-widget.com. Also, I love Quick Event - puts events in your calendar. Pulse is a nice news app. Hope you are having as much fun as I am exploring your Droid.
