Well, I finally got a smart phone (been more than a few months, actually) and found the forums soon after. Spent some time reading through odds and ends here, but haven't really had the time to truly "learn" how to most effectively use this beast. I guess that brings us to the beast:
Currently I have a Samsung Charge (SCH-I510) that, when I purchased it, had Froyo and now has (as of last night) Gingerbread. I would give the build information, but as of finally knuckling under and installing GB, the phone has decided that it no longer likes me and doesn't want to work. I've posted about it as I would LOVE to get some input as to what is truly going on with thing and the best way to handle it (reset without losing everything I've paid for in dloaded apps, contacts, etc.)
When purchased, it came with a Samsung Micro SDHC card with 32 Gb capacity and a "screaming" Class 0 rating (I know, they really didn't hold back, did they?) I've meant to upgrade the Micro SDHC but at this point, haven't so I don't know if that is an issue GB is having or if it's just an issue for me.
I wanted to get an Android as I am grossly anti-Apple anything. I don't really have much patience for their control related issues (what apps can be on the market, closed source everything, etc.) and love the open-source aspect of Droid. (Well, at least I did until this phone started randomly doing it's "thing" which precipitated my finally installing GB in an effort to "clean-up" what was happening with Froyo.)
I will continue to read through the threads and try to learn more about how to save what I have on the phone/SD card, but at this point I'm more concerned about not losing all my info than I am anything else. Well, that and Otterbox finally came out with a cover for it which I just got a couple weeks ago. I'm just scared as reading through some of the posts here, Verizon's "fix" for Charge related issues has been to replace with another phone. If that is truly the only recourse, I'm wide open for suggestions as to replacements to MAKE Verizon supply(my wife has the same phone and you don't want me to get started on the issues we are having with HER phone....they make mine seem mild by comparision.) I'm mostly worried about their wanting to change phones for me and then not wanting to supply replacement Otterbox, screen protectors (for hers), etc. as with how mad I am right now, I will honestly lose it and wreck their store, employees, and anyone remotely near it.
I pay a TON of money every month and have been avoiding buying a Droid pad for months based on the issues we're having with these phones and REALLY don't want to have to buy an IPad to get something that works. The same with avoiding an IPhone. I REALLY don't want to have to go that course and listen to my sister gloat as we have been having a Droid vs. Apple war for some time (long before I owned one, actually.)
Anyway, that's the short version and I hope that by belonging to this forum that I can actually learn enough to not be dangerous and fix the issues that seem to be haunting my electronics these days. As an FYI, I am a registered engineer so actually have SOME aptitude with electronics and used to dabble in Unix, Free-BSD (I LOVED having a Static ISP and server at home....those were the days when Pac Bell issued Static ISP as they didn't even remotely forecast the Internet's popularity and having your own FTP server was tantamount to having an arm growing out of your forehead: it was just something you didn't see!!)
Ok, back to being reasonably productive and trying to resist the urge to throw the phone into the blender and see how that turns out.
Thanks in advance if you are able to help out, commiserate, etc. Would be nice to know I'm not totally alone in this debacle Samsung appears to have wrought upon us poor idiots who paid full price for the Charge. I look at how much Verizon charges for them now and wish I hadn't paid nearly $400/each for them when I bought them.
